Jamberoo hockey player Vic East starred for the Australian Grandmasters veterans hockey team at the World Cup in Holland last week.

East, a veteran player who has been involved in hockey on the South Coast for more than four decades, was a key member of the Australian over-60s side which ultimately finished fourth out of the eight nations represented.

Australia thrashed England 4-1 and downed Holland's number two team 2-0 in the qualifying matches. East found the back of the net in each of the preliminary matches.

The Aussies faced Holland in the semi-finals but lost 1-0 in a thriller in front of the host nation's parochial crowd.

In the playoff for third, Australia again went down 1-0, this time to Germany.

East said the Australians had done well and could have gone further in the tournament. He said the side was unlucky not to score an equaliser and push the match into extra time in the semi-final and the playoff for third.
